Crypto Referral vs Affiliate vs Sub-Affiliate: Key Differences
Compare ordinary crypto referral links, exchange affiliate programs and sub-affiliate relationships before choosing how to grow a trading community.
A referral code, an affiliate agreement and a sub-affiliate relationship can look similar from the outside: somebody shares a link and receives a commission. For a creator, publisher or trading-community operator, however, they solve different problems. The status of your account, your relationship to the exchange and the exact fee base matter more than the headline percentage.
The three models at a glance
| Model | Typical setup | What must be checked |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary referral | An account holder shares an invite link under public referral rules | Eligible products, duration, reward caps and any user rebate |
| Direct affiliate | A reviewed partner joins an exchange program and receives partner reporting or tools | Approval criteria, negotiated terms and the verified payout base |
| Sub-affiliate / lower-level partner | A partner operates within an approved relationship to an upper-level affiliate | Linking eligibility, which party receives which share and the approval workflow |
A sub-affiliate is not a trading sub-account. A trading sub-account is a separate account or workspace used to organize trading under a primary account. A sub-affiliate is a business relationship between partners.
When an ordinary referral is enough
An occasional creator who shares a guide with a small audience may not need a managed partner agreement. Public referral programs can be easier to begin with, but the terms may differ from those offered to affiliates. Before sharing any link, ask whether the program applies to futures, spot, API trades, fee discounts and restricted markets. Do not assume a public referral percentage applies to a private partner tier.
Why an affiliate arrangement is different
An approved affiliate may have a dedicated dashboard, promotional resources and an account manager. These features do not automatically make a deal superior. A higher nominal rate against a narrower fee base can produce less than a lower rate against a broader eligible base. Your deal should specify both the rate and the fees or trades to which that rate applies.
The commission calculation starts with eligible fees and the confirmed allocation, not a trader’s notional volume. Actual eligible fees may be reduced by rebates, promotional discounts, ineligible markets or other exclusions. Use your exchange statement and approved terms to establish the applicable calculation.
What the exchanges say about lower-level relationships
BingX documents lower-level partners through its Partner Hub; upgrades and existing network issues follow specific rules. MEXC states that a sub-affiliate relationship requires both affiliates to have the appropriate status and a valid referral link, followed by a linking request that is approved. The procedures are not interchangeable across exchanges.

Questions to ask before signing
- Is this a direct exchange affiliate account or a lower-level relationship under another partner?
- Who approves the link, and what happens if I already have an account or another referrer?
- Does my displayed commission equal my effective payout? Which fees are excluded?
- Are trader rebates funded separately or deducted before calculating commissions?
- Who has access to trader reporting? What happens if the agreement ends?
- Are my countries, channels and marketing claims permitted by the exchange?
Bottom line: select a model based on account eligibility, clarity of terms and service you can actually deliver—not a single advertised commission number.
